A friend of mine, Marcy was confused. I had just suggested that she try a healthy detox diet, both as a way to jump-start the weight loss she was looking for and to help purge her system of the toxins and pollutants that I could see were weighing her down.

Marcy was a lovely woman in her mid-twenties whose skin still showed traces of the acne that had plagued her throughout her adolescence. Although she’d been an energetic teenager, she felt that she was wearing herself out as an adult, working long hours as an associate at her law firm all week and then sleeping ten or even twelve hours every Saturday and Sunday.

Disciplined and committed, Marcy tried to watch what she ate and make time for a regular workout routine, but she was discouraged by the sense that she was fighting a losing battle with both her weight and her energy level. I sensed she was also troubled by how much other life was dominated by work and how little time she had for herself and the people she loved.

One of the natural detox diets, I suggested, could clear her skin, re-store her vitality, and help her rebalance both her hunger and her priorities. Marcy liked the sound of all that, but she couldn’t quite get behind the idea of a day without food.
