Buying the right propeller for your boat can be more complicated that you first assume. Having the right propeller is a very important part of augmenting the performance and safety of your boat. When you have the correct size and style of boat propeller it will permit you to keep you engine operating in the correct range for max performance.

The two words that are used to explain the size of a propeller are diameter and pitch. Diameter is 2 times the distance from the middle of the heart to the top of the propeller blade. Smaller diameter propellers are typically used with smaller engines. Pitch is the term for the forward movement of the propeller as it goes thru a complete revolution and is measured in inches. Lower propeller pitches will increase the pulling power and acceleration of the boat. A higher pitch propeller will permit the boat to go faster only if the engine has the power to keep the rpms in the best range. If the engine doesn’t have enough power you can end up with severe engine damage.

There are three blade propeller and 4 blade propellers available. Usually the two are interchangeable on both outboards and stemdrives without a gigantic difference in performance. If the propeller you already have gives you satisfactory performance then you need to probably stick with a propeller which as a pitch and diameter which is very similar.

Boat propellers are all made out of chrome steel, composite, or aluminum. An inexpensive option this offers good sturdiness and performance is the composite propeller. Aluminum propellers are probably used most often and work for many different types of applications. There are lots of different types of aluminum boat propeller from which to choose. If you’re looking for the highest level of both sturdiness and performance then you should consider getting a stainless-steel propeller.
